The St. Louis Royals concluded their season this weekend in Washington, MO with a decisive victory over The Franklin County Crimson on Saturday. The Royals put up 4 unanswered tries in the 1st half as a result of the calculated kicking game that had been successful pinning the ball back in Crimson territory most of the game. Once the Royals gained field position they capitalized with their forward pack for 22 points in the front half of the match.
The play of the game came in the 2nd half from inside center David Stewart who connected with flyhalf Phil Powell for an inside switch. Stewart broke the line with great pace and managed to break 3 more tackles before pinning the ball down in the try zone for the Royal’s final try of the match. The Crimson managed a try in the 2nd half as well to round out the 27-5 win for the Blue and Gold.
Coming into the Spring season, the Royals will have inside track to the top seed in the Missouri Union Division III playoff. Coaches and supporters are all anxious to see if the Royals can field a dedicated side for another appearance at the West to be their 4th playoff birth in the last 7 seasons. The Royals will have their work cut out for them to win the 4 team Missouri Playoff with such opponents as a stellar Bombers side who proved stingy in both meetings this fall.
The Royals continue MRFU cup play this Saturday at Forest Park in St. Louis against the Belleville Rowdies RFC. Coming off a B Side friendly match with Kohlfield and a buy week last Saturday, the Royals will look to regroup and finish the fall in a position to compete for an opportunity to advance to post season play in the Spring. Eager for the rematch in two weeks with the Bombers, the Royals will not look past Belleville as a key opponent and victory that will be needed to pursue their goals to return to post season play for the first time since 2011. Come support the Royals on Saturday afternoon as they get back into action.
